How To: Pocket Pillow Covers

Do you have some throw pillows at home that don’t make you happy? Maybe they came with your couch, you bought them in college and they are not your style, or they are just plain old and ugly? Well for that, my friends, I have a solution! I call them Pocket Pillows. (Not to be confused with these…..) Basically, my version of the pocket pillow is a cover that you can use to cover up ugly or old pillows, providing your pillows still have their shape and stuffing. One thing I have to apologize about before hand is this: I am not a good “pattern sewer”, so much of my sewing is guess work and more of a creative process than a technical one. I will do my best with the instructions, please feel free to ask questions in the comment section.

What you need:

Sewing Machine

Fabric: The general rule of thumb is half a yard for 14 to 18 inch pillows and 1 yard for 19 to 24 inch pillows.

Thread to match fabric

Pins

Scissors

Measuring tape / Yardstick

Make it happen:

1.

Using the pillow as a guide, cut your fabric so that you have about 2 inches of fabric on the left & right sides of the pillow and at least a 4 inch overlap when you fold your fabric from top to bottom. Make sure to allow for enough room for the pillows “thickness”, you don’t want it to bust out the middle! See photo for illustration. Hem top and bottom of fabric for a clean edge.

2.

Using the pillow as a guide again, fold the fabric (print inside) over your pillow. Pin the left side close to the pillow, so the cover will not be loose. Mark your hem on the right side with a pin and slip the pillow out of the fabric. Continue to pin the right side just like the left.

3.

Sew along your pins on both right & left side.

4.

Trim any excess threads and turn fabric right side out.

5.

Place cover around pillow! Now you have a lovely new-ish pillow that will make your sofa proud!
